The 2024 Edition of “The Jake” Raises $2,083.96 for the Learning Disabilities Association of PEI

The organizing committee for “The Jake” is thrilled to share the success of this year’s Run-Bike-Walk event, which took place from September 29 to October 1, 2024. Thanks to the generous participation and donations of supporters, the event raised $2,083.96 for the Learning Disabilities Association of PEI, this year’s chosen beneficiary.
“This is an amazing donation” said Cindy Lapeña, Officer-in-Charge. “The Learning Disabilities Association of Prince Edward Island supports Islanders with learning disabilities and those who love, live, and work with them and these funds will be used as bursaries for two individuals to get the support they need”, she added.
A Continuing Legacy “The Jake” was created in memory of Jacob Simmons, a passionate athlete and community member from Belfast, PEI, whose life was tragically cut short by an impaired driver in 2020. This year’s event continued to inspire Islanders and beyond to walk, run, or cycle in memory of Jacob while supporting a very meaningful caus. Participants enjoyed the flexibility of choosing their activity and route, with suggestions including cyclists (20-40 km), runners (5-10 km) and walkers (4-6 km).
To take part in The Jake, participants contribute a minimum suggested donation of $20 and then they choose their activity on any segment of the Confederation Trail, on any of the Island Nature Trails, or on any segment of The Island Walk that they wish. If participants aren’t able to access any of the trails above, they can walk, run or cycle anywhere they wish to take part!
In 2022 and 2023, the event supported the PEI Chapter of MADD Charlottetown and Eastern PEI, raising over $4,100 in total for this vital cause.
The Community Foundation of PEI hosts a donor portal for people to register, contribute and receive their charitable donation receipt. The Foundation then pools the funds together to donate to the charity, in this case the Learning Disability Association of PEI.
